Student Financial Hardship
We know that financial stability can be a major challenge for some University students. In fact, more than half of Australian university students are worrying frequently about their finances and significant numbers are even having to skip meals to see themselves through university.
The rising cost of living, unaffordable housing, course fees, and rising student HECS debts are all contributing to more financial stress for our students. The pressure to work more hours while still maintaining a high course load can have a big impact on student's mental health as well.
We are here to help, with a range of financial and wellbeing supports to help you make it through your studies.
STUDENT FINANCIAL HARDSHIP SCHEME
If you are experiencing temporary financial hardship you can apply for assistance from our Student Safety and Wellbeing Team to help with essential living expenses, like vouchers for groceries and learning resources (such as textbooks), one-off bill payments, or temporary financial support during times of personal crisis or stress (such as Financial and Domestic Violence).
Who can get it?
To apply, you must demonstrate the following:
• You are a student currently enrolled in units at the University of Tasmania
• You are living in Australia
• Your financial difficulty is genuine, unexpected, and is temporary
What are examples of financial hardship?
There are many different circumstances under which a student may be eligible for the SFHS e.g.
• Unexpected termination of your paid employment
• Unexpected loss or reduction of income relating to personal or other unforeseen circumstances such as illness, bereavement, or caring commitments
• Financial challenges associated with Family and Domestic Violence
• Unexpected cost, for example, medical expenses, repairs for laptop or car repairs etc.
How can I apply?
Fill out this application form
If you have any documentation that will assist us in reviewing your application, please upload with the application. Such documentation could include:
• Up to date financial documents showing the balance of all accounts in your name (e.g., current bank statement)
• Evidence of any changes that have impacted you financially, (e.g., a letter from your employer if your hours have been reduced)
• Evidence to show that you will imminently be required to pay a substantial or unforeseen expense
• Other documents, such as bills, invoices, rental agreements, etc. that demonstrate your financial responsibilities
If you do not have any of the above, please still complete the application with a statement detailing your financial hardship and we will contact you with any further questions. A member of the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team will review it and contact you as soon as possible to advise on the outcome of the application.
