High Impact Learning Experiences (HILEs) Toolbox
Jon's sandpit collection: H5P Activities & Padlets
Introduction
This toolbox has been developed to showcase the use of digital High Impact Learning Experiences (HILEs) within University College course curriculum.
H5P is a resource that lets us create simple interactive content like interactive videos, quizzes, games, presentations, and lots more. Once we create an H5P interaction we can embed it into your Shorthand page. It is important to note that H5P does not record student learning, so these activities would be formative learning exercises to reinforce the content being presented.
Interactive Video
The H5P Interactive Video content type lets you add multiple choice, fill in the blank questions, pop-up explanatory text, image, tables and other types of interactions to Youtube videos. The video plays, then stops and prompts learners to answer a question. There is even an option to automatically rewind and make them watch the section of video again, if they answer a question wrong.
All question types can be configured to perform adaptive behavior, meaning that a correct answer could cause the user to skip to a specified place in the video while an incorrect answer could take the user somewhere else in the video. Typically, submitting a wrong answer will cause the user to be directed to the place in the video where the answer to the question is presented.
This example is from a University College unit on Contemporary Business Environments. You can click on the small white circles at the bottom of the video to jump to the interactive components if you would like.
Audio Recorder
This H5P activity can be used by students to record simple audio presentations, pronunciations, or general audio.
Recorded audio can then be downloaded onto a student's personal device.
Please note: recordings will not be saved. Once audio has been recorded, it is advised that the user downloads a copy for themselves.
Below is an example use case for the Audio Recorder:
Image Juxtaposition
Image Juxtaposition content type that allows users to compare two images interactively.
Virtual Tour (360)
Use you mouse to drag the image around and click on the hotspots to explore the safety aspects of the environment.
Multiple Choice Questions
Multiple Choice Questions can be used to create challenges where the user is to identify one or more correct choices. The learner is given immediate performance feedback.
Documentation tool
The Documentation Tool allows the creation of a multi-page form with text entry fields. Students can be prompted to complete each section and can then preview and download a local copy of their report. This increases the student's overall time on the site, and allows them to refer back to the module content without switching windows or tabs. The documentation tool could be particularly useful for questionnaire and e-portfolio reporting tasks.
- Additional features are being researched at the moment, namely;
- Customising the exported file name (exports as 'exported_text' by default)
- Sending scoring and interaction data back to the LMS
Branching Scenario
The branching scenario content type allowing users to create dilemmas, self paced learning scenarios and other types of adaptive learning. The content may be video based or based on a large selection of other H5P content types. The following example is proved by H5P.
Timeline Tool
The Timeline content type allows you to place a sequence of events in a chronological order. For each event you may add images and texts. You may also include assets from Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, Google Maps and SoundCloud.
Checklists
Checklists can be embedded into weekly content and can be a great tool for students to check-off the tasks that they need to complete over the week.

Annotations
We can now provide in text annotations for word or phrases. In your DET content document, highlight the word/s you would like annotated and include as a comment to your DET member, for example "add annotation here: a reaction in which electrons are lost to another molecules/ion"
Please see an example of in text annotations below:
Glycolysis – during glycolysis (literally “sugar-splitting”) a series of reactions convert the six-carbon sugar, glucose, into two molecules of pyruvate – a three-carbon compound, with ATP and NADH (an electron carrying molecule formed from NAD+) being made in the process.
Video
Video is a powerful way to build and maintain student engagement in weekly content and can help to ensure that learning takes place at a deeper level.
It is important to remember that video should be used for showing not telling!
Video is best saved for demonstrating key concepts in the learning content.
Please see some examples below of video content that has been created by the Digital Education Team:
Studio in Your Pocket
The Digital Education Team have created a resource for staff to demonstrate how to film high quality footage for your course/units using your mobile phone.
You can access the resource by clicking the following link:
Video Editing in Windows 10
The Digital Education Team have created a resource for staff to learn how to easily and efficiently edit video content offline (on your desktop PC).
You can access this resource bly clicking the following link:
Editing and Uploading Video to Echo360
Echo360 is UTAS's video hosting platform of choice. While Echo360 is predominantly used to record lecture content, you can also upload, edit, and share videos from your own personal Echo360 library.
Echo360 supports uploading of video content from mobile iOS and Android devices. This means staff can record footage on mobile devices and upload directly to their Echo360 library - bypassing the need to transfer video content to desktop devices first.
It should be noted that Echo360 is quite slow to upload and process videos. You may find it more efficient to use the above Video Editing in Windows 10 guide to edit your videos before uploading them to your Echo360 library.
You can also use the Echo360 Universal Capture video recording software to record desktop videos. You can record videos, including desktop content and webcam footage, and have it automatically upload to your Echo360 library.
Echo360 Universal Capture does not allow you to edit video content.
If you do not have Echo360 Universal Capture installed on your UTAS device, please follow this guide below to install:
Interactive Padlet
Padlet is an embeddable discussion board which allows students to respond to a question or writing prompt. It also allows students to comment on the responses of others, to 'like' contributions from other students, and even to link similar ideas, images or videos. There are many types of boards that support a range of in class or online activities.
